Speaking of getting things under control, here is my daughter.
In case you didn't recognize her, it is because her hair is overtaking her head. Time to take some control back.
Ahhh, much better. Agreed? Too bad she undid my hard work a few minutes later.
Anyway, back to getting the Draper household under control. I have been working on the food storage/household supplies situation lately and am sad to report that we have suffered a loss in the form of 30 jars of expired peanut butter, 20 cans of expired diced tomatoes, and 14 boxes of stale cereal.
In case you think I already have a year's supply of food storage, don't. You see, the last time we really worked on stocking up on food was when we lived in Utah, and let's just say that those 30 jars of peanut butter were giving me a little peace of mind since they were kind of lonesome down in my basement. And now they are gone.
So, I'm still working on my plan. However, there was an ACTUAL shortage that quickly caught my attention. It involved The Toilet Paper Supply. Last spring, I used some coupons and hunted for deals and bought a lot of toilet paper and paper towels. Enough that I have not bought any since and still have 19 rolls of Viva paper towels in my basement. I know, crazy (as in, I know I'm crazy). But, the time had come to acquire some toilet paper.
So, I spotted a sweet deal at a local grocery store where if you bought two 12-roll packs you got a $3 off coupon for your next shopping order. That made each pack of 12 rolls only $4! And it was quilted. And 3-ply. And Ultra Plush double rolls. It doesn't get much better that that (30 cents a roll is a couple cents more than the price you pay for the cheapest type at Walmart). So, I headed off to the grocery store.
The catch is that you have to buy only two packs of TP in each transaction. Then you get a coupon and use it for the next transaction, etc. Coupons sometimes tend to create a scene when you have to check out. So I decided to use the self-checkout. And sometimes the self-checkout rejects your coupon because you have to drop it in this little slot that doesn't always detect the coupon. If that happens, you have to wait for a store clerk to come clear out the register and enter it manually. Luckily the coupons worked for all but two of the transactions.
So by the time I was doing the last transaction, I had a pile of toilet paper taller than me and I had to peek around it just to get the store clerk's attention. It was this twenty-something year old guy and he sees me and my mountain of toilet paper and was like, "WOW, that is A LOT of toilet paper." Then he looked at me, waiting for me to explain or something. Yes, my friend, it is a lot of toilet paper. Now please just fix this register so I can get the heck out of this store.
Of course, all the other people at the checkout were buying like one loaf of bread or 2 apples or something. So I stood out just a little. But it's okay, I am not going to run out of toilet paper for a really long time. And did I mention it is 3-ply?

You are the coupon queen!! I'm super impressed with your skills. I highly recommend Aldi's if you're trying to stock up on food storage cheaply. I've been trying to build up our food storage too and just realized the other day that I'm really not even close to what I need to be. Good luck!
Hey, I did food storage today...mostly organizing to get some inventory and figure out what I need. Of course first I had to clean the room the food storage was in (and sewing and laundry), so that took a while. However, the night was complete when I made magnets with food storage items on them to put on my metal shelves...ah a feeling of satisfaction. Now, I just have to go replenish. And don't feel bad, I tossed 14 jars of homemade strawberry jam, and 3 10ct cans of church pudding.
haha great job Mer! I love that Braden is posing with the toilet paper. Your little one is just darling! I love the pigtails! I can't believe how grown up she looks already. So cute!
Nice shoppin Mama! Way to be concerned about your families behinds - even when trying to be thrifty.
So is that toilet paper deal still going? I used to be so good and deals and coupons, but out here the stores aren't really competitive. I did just sign up to get the Sunday paper to get more coupons and be more on the ball. As weird as it sounds, do you mind giving me a heads up on the next toilet paper find and I'll let you know if I find one too. Good job on food storage. I'm doing so much better in that dept than I was in Az and rotating it too. It's really hard to keep up with that laundry huh? ;)
